Poor Merlot, you have gotten a bad rap over the past 15 years or so, but we feel that it is time for a comeback! Originally named Merlau which is French for “Little Blackbird”, The variety has been a part of the classic Bordeaux blend since the 1st Century A.D. It ripens earlier than its father Cabernet Franc or its cousin Cabernet Sauvignon and has thinner skins. This makes a soft, black fruited wine which historically has made it a blending grape.
Not any more Merlot! Time for your moment in the sun!
Ours has notes of boysenberry, blueberry and bing cherry that is held together with a moderate tannic structure. Toasty oak enhances a long soft finish of dark chocolate with violets and soft green herbs (not that one!).
Yummy, yummy, get in my tummy little blackbird!
